Air conditioning is still seen as a luxury by many UK homeowners — something for hot countries, expensive hotels or office buildings. But modern split systems have changed the game completely. Here are the five biggest myths we hear from Nottinghamshire homeowners, and the truth behind them.
Myth 1: "The UK Isn't Hot Enough to Need AC"
UK summers are getting hotter. Nottinghamshire regularly sees temperatures above 30°C in summer, and poorly insulated homes can become unbearably hot. But here's the thing — modern split systems are heat pumps. They heat your home in winter too, often more efficiently than gas boilers.
Myth 2: "Air Conditioning is Expensive to Run"
Modern A+++ rated inverter systems are remarkably efficient. When used for heating, they can deliver 3-4kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity used — making them 300-400% efficient. Compare that to a gas boiler at around 90% efficiency, and the economics start to look very different.
Myth 3: "Installation is Disruptive and Takes Days"
A typical single-room split system installation takes 4-6 hours. We install the indoor unit, run refrigerant pipes through the wall to the outdoor condenser, make the electrical connections and commission the system — all in a single visit with minimal disruption.
Myth 4: "AC Dries Out the Air and Makes You Ill"
Modern systems include humidity control and air filtration. Some models, like Panasonic's nanoe-X range, actively improve indoor air quality by removing allergens, bacteria and viruses. Used correctly, AC can actually improve the air quality in your home.
Myth 5: "You Need Planning Permission"
In most cases, domestic air conditioning installations are permitted development — no planning permission required. Exceptions include listed buildings and some conservation areas. We advise on this during the free survey.
