Top 10 Electrical Safety Tips for Nottinghamshire Homeowners

Electrical faults cause around 20,000 house fires in the UK every year. Many of these are preventable with basic awareness and regular maintenance. Here are our top 10 electrical safety tips for homeowners across Nottinghamshire.

1. Test Your RCDs Monthly

Press the test button on your RCDs (the switches marked "T" on your consumer unit) monthly. They should trip immediately and reset when you push them back up. If they don't trip or won't reset, call an electrician.

2. Never Overload Sockets

Avoid daisy-chaining extension leads and never exceed the rated load of a socket or extension. High-current appliances like kettles, toasters and washing machines should always be plugged directly into wall sockets.

3. Check for Damaged Cables

Regularly inspect cables on appliances for damage, fraying or kinking. Never run cables under carpets or rugs where they can overheat. Replace damaged cables immediately — never use tape as a repair.

4. Install Smoke Alarms on Every Floor

Mains-wired, interlinked smoke alarms give you the best protection. Test them monthly and replace them every 10 years. Heat alarms are better for kitchens where smoke alarms may false alarm.

5. Get an EICR Every 10 Years

Even if you're not a landlord, an EICR every 10 years is strongly recommended. It identifies hidden faults that you would never spot yourself — and catches problems before they become dangerous.

6. Never DIY Electrical Work

In the UK, most electrical work must be carried out by a qualified electrician and notified to building control. DIY electrical work is dangerous, illegal in many cases, and can invalidate your home insurance.

7. Be Careful with Water

Never use electrical appliances near water. In bathrooms, only use shaver sockets or specially rated bathroom fittings. Never touch switches or sockets with wet hands.

8. Unplug Appliances When Not in Use

Appliances left on standby can still cause fires if they develop a fault. Unplug appliances like phone chargers, toasters and TVs when not in use — especially overnight.

9. Check Your Consumer Unit

If your consumer unit is old, has rewirable fuses, or has no RCD protection, it needs upgrading. A modern consumer unit with RCDs and MCBs provides significantly better protection.

10. Know Where Your Main Switch Is

Make sure everyone in your household knows where the main switch is on your consumer unit and how to turn it off in an emergency. In a serious electrical fault, cutting the power quickly can save lives.
