How to Choose an Electrician in Nottinghamshire: The 2026 Homeowner's Checklist

Finding a good electrician in Nottinghamshire should be straightforward — but with so many options and varying levels of quality, it can be genuinely confusing. This practical checklist covers everything you need to know to choose the right electrician for your home or business, avoid costly mistakes, and ensure all work is done safely and legally.

1. Check They Are Registered with a Competent Person Scheme

In England, electricians who carry out notifiable work must either be registered with a Competent Person Scheme such as NAPIT or NICEIC, or have their work approved by your local Building Control office. Registered electricians can self-certify their work, which is faster, cheaper and more convenient. You can verify any electrician's registration at napit.org.uk or niceic.com.

2. Ask for a Written, Itemised Quote

Never accept a verbal quote. A professional electrician will provide a written, itemised quotation covering materials, labour, certification and any additional charges.

3. Check Their Google Reviews and References

Google reviews provide genuine customer feedback. Look for electricians with a substantial number of reviews, a consistent rating of 4.5 or above, and recent reviews that mention specific work. Ask for references from previous customers with similar work to yours, and actually contact them.

4. Verify Their Insurance

Any professional electrician working on your property should have Public Liability Insurance and Employer's Liability Insurance. Ask to see their insurance certificate before work begins. Uninsured electrical work leaves you exposed if something goes wrong.

5. Understand What Certification You Should Receive

For new circuits and installations, you should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. For minor additions, a Minor Works Certificate. For inspections, an EICR. If an electrician cannot provide these documents, their work is likely uncertified — which could invalidate your insurance and cause problems when selling your property.

6. Beware of These Red Flags

Avoid electricians who: quote verbally only; ask for large upfront cash payments; claim to be registered but cannot provide a registration number; or pressure you to make a quick decision. Professional electricians are busy — they do not need to pressure anyone.

7. What to Ask When Getting Quotes in Nottinghamshire

Key questions to ask: Are you NAPIT or NICEIC registered? Does your quote include all certification and Building Control notification? Are you fully insured? Can you provide references? A professional electrician will answer all of these questions readily. DDF Electrical is NAPIT-registered and happy to answer any questions before you book.
