How to Prepare Your Home for a Full Rewire: A Nottinghamshire Checklist

A full house rewire is a significant project that requires some preparation to ensure everything runs smoothly. While your electrician will handle all the technical work, there are several steps you can take to protect your belongings, minimise disruption and help the work proceed efficiently. Here is our practical checklist for Nottinghamshire homeowners preparing for a rewire.

1. Clear Access to Walls and Floors

Your electrician will need access to all walls, floors and ceilings where cables run. Move furniture away from walls where possible, roll back carpets if they are not being replaced, and clear loft spaces and under-floor areas. The more access we have, the faster and more efficiently we can work. If you are having new flooring or decorating done after the rewire, consider removing old carpets beforehand.

2. Protect Your Belongings

Rewiring creates dust and debris, particularly during chasing of walls for cables. Cover furniture with dust sheets, remove valuables and fragile items from work areas, and seal wardrobes and cupboards with tape. While we always tidy up after ourselves, taking these precautions protects your belongings from the inevitable dust that comes with chasing walls.

3. Plan for No Power

During the rewire, power will be off for periods — sometimes for several hours at a time. Plan accordingly: charge phones and laptops in advance, fill a thermos with hot water, and consider how you will manage without power for cooking, heating and lighting. For families with young children or elderly relatives, planning alternative arrangements for the most disruptive days is wise.

4. Decide on Socket and Switch Positions

Before work begins, walk through each room and decide where you want sockets, switches, light fittings and any special circuits. Consider future needs: USB sockets, EV charging, outdoor power, smart home systems. We will confirm all positions during the first fix, but having a clear plan beforehand speeds up the process and ensures you get exactly what you want.

5. Arrange Alternative Accommodation if Needed

For a full rewire, some homeowners prefer to stay elsewhere for a few days. This is particularly sensible if you work from home, have young children, or rely on electrical medical equipment. Even if you stay in the property, having a backup plan for the most disruptive days provides peace of mind. We will advise you on what to expect when we survey your property.

6. Let Your Insurer Know

Inform your home insurer that you are having electrical work done. Most policies cover rewiring by a qualified electrician, but it is best to check. Keep all certificates and documentation safe — your insurer and future buyers will want to see them. A valid Electrical Installation Certificate can also reduce your insurance premiums.
