Your consumer unit — also known as a fuse board or distribution board — controls and protects every electrical circuit in your home. An outdated or faulty consumer unit is one of the most common causes of electrical fires and shock hazards in UK homes. Here are the key signs that yours needs attention.
1. You Still Have a Rewirable Fuse Board
If your consumer unit has old-style rewirable fuses (ceramic fuse holders with wire inside), it is well overdue for replacement. These offer no RCD protection and are significantly less safe than modern units with MCBs and RCDs.
2. Circuits Keep Tripping
Occasional tripping is normal, but if circuits trip regularly without an obvious cause, it could indicate a fault in the consumer unit itself, overloaded circuits, or a wiring problem that needs investigation.
3. No RCD Protection
RCDs (Residual Current Devices) are life-saving devices that cut power in milliseconds if they detect a fault. Modern consumer units have RCD protection on all circuits. If yours does not, you are at significantly higher risk of electric shock.
4. Your Consumer Unit is Over 25 Years Old
Consumer units have a typical lifespan of 25-30 years. An older unit may not meet current regulations and may not be able to accommodate modern electrical demands like EV chargers, heat pumps or smart home systems.
5. You Are Adding New Circuits
Adding an EV charger, electric shower, or additional circuits to an old consumer unit is often not possible without an upgrade. A new unit gives you the capacity for current and future needs.
6. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks
Any burning smell, discolouration or scorch marks around your consumer unit is a serious warning sign. Turn off the main switch and call an electrician immediately — do not ignore this.
7. Your EICR Has Flagged It
If your EICR has identified C1 or C2 issues with your consumer unit, replacement is not optional — it is required. DDF Electrical can carry out consumer unit upgrades across Nottinghamshire, typically in a single day.
