Why Does My Fuse Box Keep Tripping at Night? Common Causes and Solutions

Waking up in the middle of the night because your fuse box has tripped — clocks reset, heating off, food defrosting in the freezer — is a particularly frustrating experience. But a fuse box that trips consistently at night is usually telling you something specific. Here are the most common causes we see when we attend call-outs across Nottinghamshire for overnight tripping faults.

Immersion Heater or Overnight Charging Timer

Many properties in Nottinghamshire use economy 7 or economy 10 tariffs, which means high-power appliances like immersion heaters and storage heaters switch on automatically overnight. If the circuit is marginal or the appliance has developed a fault, this timed switching-on can cause a trip. Check whether the trip corresponds exactly with the timer or tariff switching time — this is a strong indicator.

EV Charger Overnight Charging

Many EV owners schedule their vehicle charging for overnight off-peak periods. If your EV charger is drawing more current than the circuit can safely handle — perhaps because of a fault in the charger, a weak MCB, or a circuit that is already loaded with other appliances — it can cause overnight trips. DDF Electrical can assess whether your EV charger installation and circuit are correctly specified.

Refrigerator or Freezer Compressor Cycling

Refrigerators and freezers cycle their compressors on and off throughout the day and night. At night, when the house is quiet and temperatures may drop slightly, compressors can run longer cycles and draw higher starting currents. If the fridge or freezer is ageing, has a developing fault, or shares a circuit with other appliances, this can cause trips overnight.

Faulty MCB or RCD

Consumer unit components don't last forever. An MCB or RCD that is approaching the end of its service life may trip at lower currents than it should — particularly when it has warmed up during the day and is operating at slightly elevated temperatures overnight. A nuisance-tripping MCB or RCD that tests as faulty needs to be replaced.

Heating System Overnight Programs

Electric storage heaters, underfloor heating systems and heat pumps can all draw significant overnight current. If any element in the heating system has developed a fault — a cracked element, a failing contactor, or a damaged cable — it may cause trips during overnight heating cycles.

How to Diagnose the Cause

The best way to diagnose overnight tripping is to identify exactly which circuit is tripping (note which MCB or RCD is in the down position when you find it), then systematically disconnect items from that circuit. If the issue disappears when you disconnect a specific appliance, you've found your culprit. If the circuit trips even with nothing connected, the fault is in the wiring or consumer unit itself.

When to Call DDF Electrical

If you cannot identify the cause, if the fault is in the wiring rather than an appliance, or if the MCB or RCD appears to be faulty, call DDF Electrical on 07711 933088. We cover all of Nottinghamshire and can often diagnose and resolve overnight tripping faults on the first visit. For urgent situations — particularly if you have lost heating, medical equipment power, or food refrigeration — call us immediately.
